Computer Headphones
I became interested in getting computer headphones simply to keep from bothering anyone else with the noises coming from the computer while I was using it. And if that meant giving up a little sound quality then so be it. But I was happily surprised to find that the headphones I purchased not only did not give up any sound quality, but they also brought out subtle sounds quite clearly that I did not know were even present in computer games I had played for hours and hours before.
I was careful to buy well regarded headphones without paying a ransom for it - the "sweet spot", you know - so I purchased the Plantronics Multimedia Stereo PC Headset Audio 90. And to allow me to easily switch between the headphone and the computer speakers, I purchased a Plantronics PC Speaker Headset Switch with it. Here is the front view of the retail packages of the headphones (leftmost item in the picture) and switch. Click on either picture to see it enlarged. And here's the back.
Here are the headphones outside of the retail backage. I've circled key elements in different colors. It has a mute switch, circled in yellow, a volume control, circled in blue, and a microphone, circled in red.
And here are front and back views of the Headset Switch. The switch is very handy since it allows me to switch between the computer headphones and computer speakers with the flip of a switch - no rearranging connections. Installation is pretty easy thanks to the color-coding and icon-labeling of the connections.
Buy.com has the headphones and the headset switch . Clicking the links takes you directly to each item.
